Using Students to Change Teachers

When in the classroom I had the opportunity to have students bring in members of the community to our manufacturing lab. They worked with the adults to aid them in understanding several software programs and CNC programming language.

I wonder if a summer inservice lead by students might not be a great idea. Bloggs and personal webspace can be powerful teaching tools and it seems to me that students might be the best resource we have in our area on this type of technology. Not to mention their skills could be obtained at a very reasonable cost. Wink

Not to mention, they will show the teachers the world they are and will be living in.  Many of the teachers in our building, I am sad to say, do not have computers at home but only use them for the required activities at school. There are always exceptions like my grandmother who is 86 years old and e-mails me almost daily, but most generally wmost adults stay at the technology level we reach in our teens unless our work requires us to do otherwise. Teachers are still able to get away with teaching a course without much use of techology. I am not saying they are teaching it well but they are teaching it.

David, I was having this same conversation today. My school is establishing a Technology Club and one of the goals is to send student into classroom where technology is not frequently used to demonstrate their projects and to help teacher when they want to use technology. The goal is to use "viral marketing" with the other students to show them what they could be doing and to show teachers what is possible.

So, we expect and hope that student will influence teacher behavior.

Rob

I would be very interested to hear more on how this will be structured and if you could keep us updated as to how it is received by those involved.

This is outstanding and I am very interested in replicating this idea in our Fort Dodge High School learning community.  Thanks for any guidance you might provide.
